Searching for John Donahoe's Siblings
tracy — Thu, 08/03/2006 - 18:33
Recently, I decided to see if I could find any siblings of John Donahoe, son of Cornelius Donahoe and Mary Deasy/Dacey. John is the father of my husband's great-great-grandmother Mary Donahoe. Mary was born about 1873 in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, the daughter of John Donahoe and Eliza Field. John, her father, was born about 1840 in Ireland. By searching the Massachusetts vital records for Marlborough, between 1850 and 1880, I was able to identify a number of additional children of Cornelius and Mary.
This entry will cover the oldest child I found of Cornelius and Mary Donahoe.
Census Tools for Genealogists
tracy — Wed, 07/05/2006 - 11:31
While listening to the July 3rd podcast from The Genealogy Guys podcast, I got a great tip concerning census research. The creator of the Census Tools website (http://www.censustools.com) created a number of tools for extracting census data. These tools include Excel spreadsheet forms for a number of common research types including US censuses, US state censuses, international censuses, cemetery data, passenger manifests, family group sheets, research logs. In addition to the Excel spreadsheets, the website also has forms available in the pdf format.

Why Verizon is asking Google for money
tracy — Fri, 01/20/2006 - 21:00
Many people are commenting about the proposal made by Verizon, Bell South, and other companies demanding that Google pay telecoms money to ensure that users can view their premium content. Such premium content would undoubtedly include Google Video. Many of these same people are calling this a double-dip or a pure money grab, since home users are already paying for their access. However, what many of them fail to mention is that Verizon, and probably a few other telecom companies, are in the process of laying vasts amounts of fiber optic cable across the US, a rather costly proposition. So costly, in fact, that it's doubtful Verizon can afford to pay for these upgrades from subscriber fees alone.
Add Stickies to Web Pages
tracy — Fri, 01/20/2006 - 09:33
A neat new tool recently entered beta. Called MyStickies, it allows users to add sticky notes to any web page. The key is installing a browser extension for your browser which enables you to view the stickies. If you're interested, sign up for an account at http://www.mystickies.com and give it a spin. Currently, the extension is only available for Firefox users.
Since the announcement of the beta just arrived on my desk(top), I haven't had a lot of time to think of great uses yet. However, I could see people getting a lot of use out of the product when doing all sorts of research, especially genealogy research.
MidNite Laundromat
tracy — Sun, 01/15/2006 - 14:32
I'm writing this from the comfort of MidNite Laundromat in Newtonville, MA. So far my experience here is great. In addition to extremely helpful staff and reasonable prices, the location has free wi-fi access. With it's location near both Cabot's restaurant and Whole Foods, there are lots of things you can do while you wait for your laundry. And the staff can't be beat. For instance, when my husband dropped me off today, he forgot our shopping list. Since he realized this when he got to Whole Foods, he figured it was easier to walk back than to drive. I explained to the gentleman here that I had to leave for a moment to give the list to my husband and he insisted on bringing it himself so I could finish loading the machines. He also offered a number of times to help me with my chores, including moving the laundry closer to the machine, and offering to watch over my things when I went to get something to drink from Cabots.
Another Use for Del.icio.us
tracy — Wed, 01/11/2006 - 12:51
In addition using del.icio.us as a research log, I have found yet another use for the site. Using the aggregator2 module for Drupal, I can add items from my del.icio.us rss feed as a node to my site, allowing me to kill two birds with one stone. In addition, once it's on my site, it gives my visitors a chance to see and comment on what I find interesting and important, without any additional work on my part.
I hope other social networking sites pick up on this idea.
New Site Look
tracy — Sat, 01/07/2006 - 21:01
Over the past few weeks, I worked on a new default site look for the site. The old look seemed a bit washed out for my tastes. I hope the new color choices and use of color to delineate blocks will make the site more vibrant and easier to use. Over the next few weeks, I hope to make additonal changes to make the site easier to use. Also keep a look out for site tips. And, as always, if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. Feel free to leave a comment or email me at tracy.hurley[at]hurleyit.com.
One new feature is the share links both in the right navigation menu and below each story.
Windows Patch Released
tracy — Fri, 01/06/2006 - 08:20
Microsoft has released the official patch for the WMF vulnerability found earlier. All Microsoft users should download and install this patch as the threat is pretty serious. It is highly recommended that you use the Windows Update tool if it's on your computer but you can also find the necessary downloads here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-001.mspx.
