Hurley's World

Because I could not find detailed instructions on how to set up the LG VX8100 cell phone with BitPim on a Mac running Panther, I decided to write down what I did here. Use these instructions at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damage that occurs to your phone or computer as a result of following these instructions.

Download and Install BitPim

I downloaded version 0.7.36 from here: BitPim v.0.7.36

Enable Bluetooth on your computer

Go to System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Settings. If Bluetooth is currently off, turn it on by clicking in the button.

Enable Bluetooth on your phone

Go to Menu -> Settings & Tools -> PC Connection (9) and choose Bluetooth (3). Then push CLR and go to Bluetooth (0) -> Power (2) and turn the power on. Then go to My Visibility (3) and choose Shown to All.

Pair the phone with your computer

Go to System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Devices and click on Set Up New Device. Click Continue. Choose Mobile Phone and click on Continue. Your mobile phone should appear on the list. Choose it and click on Continue. You will be given a passkey to enter into your phone. On your phone, accept the communication from the computer and enter the passkey. The computer will tell you to select the services you'll want. Once you click continue, the two devices should be paired.

Create a Bluetooth Serial Port for your phone on your computer

Open the Bluetooth Serial Utility (Applications -> Utilities). Click on the New button. Enter the name for the serial port. Click on Select Device and select your phone and the service from the list. Click on OK.

Set Up BitPim

Start BitPim. If it's not already open when you start BitPim, open the Preferences file (BitPim -> Preferences). Pick your phone type from the list [LG-VX8100 (Verizon Wireless)]. Enter your com port. The best way to do this is to click on the Browse button and choose the one you set up earlier. Set any of the other settings you want and click on OK. Your phone should now be set up to work with BitPim.
