Call To Arms: Invading The Speakeasy.
I just got through reading a great post by my pal Buck Paxton over on VolcanoBoy.com. Not only does Buck have a great wit and writing style, but I can always count on him to sift through the filler that is the Worcester “news” and hand off the gold nuggets that are left in his pan. Today Buck points us to some sweeping changes taking place over at the beloved Telegram and Gazette. You may remember the T&G for recently doing a better job distributing your personal information than disseminating news, but that is neither here nor there. Amongst other things, the local rag has added a forum board to it’s already kick ass website. And a new message board called ‘The Speakeasy’. The board should end up being a real gem, any thing that makes it easier for local cranks to toss vitriol grenades at Diane Williamson is sure to provide endless entertainment for those of us who live for a good flame war (that’s your cue Doug). Now in having created the forums over at WNL some five years ago, I am no stranger to the local forum board scene (NERD ALERT), and I fully understand that once you hit that “publish” button and move that pile of php live, a web forum will instantly take on a life of it’s own…far far from your control. Once a message board is released to the public, you are only left to sit back and hope that it’s inhabitants remain happy and peaceful, and that no one commits any premeditated felonies, in which the premeditation resides in your database. Any delusions you may have about being able to corral the members and the content, are best thrown out immediately. Trust me, censoring and over moderating will only make things worse. ANYWAYS…it should be interesting how the old Speakeasy plays out. I know that forum boards are not exactly cutting edge technology, but hey…it’s the T&G, things move at a bit of a retarded pace technically over there. I just have a sneaking suspicion that these guys don’t know what sort of shit storm they could be leaving themselves open to, and this being the case, I am not against testing the boundaries and giving them a bit of an initiation into the local message board scene. Think of it as the forum board equivalent of getting “jumped in”. Volcanoboy? WTDO? WNL? Who’s comin’ with me? Link? Bungle? Doug? Buck? Fly the flag proudly. Viva la revolución!
