Captain Lonsberry,
Ferryman, Dies at 71
Captain Marcus D. Lonsberry, 71, resident of 16 South Elm, Beacon, who rounded out 52 years of service with the Beacon-Newburgh ferry system last March, died at his home, yesterday. he had been in failing health for some time.
Captain Lonsberry began his ferry service as a deckhand March 19, 1896 and got his captain's license three years later. The last 15 years, Mr. Lonsberry had been dock master in charge of all deck crews including captains.
The captain and his wife, Mrs. Mary L. Moreau Lonsberry, would have observed their 51st wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving day.
Surviving, in addition to his wife are a son, Marcus R Lonsberry, Beacon; a daughter, Agnes Lonsberry; three brothers, Jospeh Lonsberry, Middletown, Harry Lonsberry, Beacon, and Arthur Lonsberry, Greenfield, Mass; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Helgersen, Omaha, and Mrs. Maude Lent, Newburgh, and three grandchildren, Marcus, Albert and Mary Lou Lonsberry.
Funeral services will be conducted at the home at 9:15 o'clock Wednesday morning and at St. John's church, Beacon, at 10 o'clock, when a High Mass of Requiem will be offered. Burial will be in St. Joachim's cemetery under the direction of John J. Halvey.
